Founded in 1991, the Urban Studio is a teaching and outreach venue of Auburn’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. Immersed in the “teaching laboratory” of Birmingham, the Urban Studio hosts students who are in their fifth year of the School’s BARCH program and selected graduate students from the School’s Master’s of Community Planning Program.

The Urban Studio, through the Small Town Design Initiative, focuses on community engagement with and for “real-world” projects/clients. Since 1998, the Urban Studio has worked with over 75 small towns, communities and neighborhoods in an assets-based planning approach that leverages “what’s good in a community” to build the highest possible quality of life and the best potential for economic vitality. Elevating the value of planning and design with the citizens of Alabama is one of the core values of the Urban Studio.

Students at Urban Studio build strong relationships with the professional community and participate in at 16-week internship during their year at Urban Studio. Their final studio projects – while speculative – focus on pressing issues or opportunities in Birmingham and often create a climate for these projects to gain public attention. Studio work, over the years, helped to initiate interest in Birmingham’s now realized Railroad Park; helped launch the city’s Design District and Pepper Place Farmers Market; and played a key role in proposals currently under investigation by the Museum of Art.

Cheryl Morgan, FAIA, recently retired Director of Auburn University’s Urban Studio in Birmingham, AL will present a retrospective of the work of the Urban Studio and will share
her perspectives on the keys to successful communities.
